Learn More About the Mercedes-Benz Logo

The Mercedes-Benz logo has evolved quite a bit over the years as the luxury brand progresses, with today’s models being marked by the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star that is instantly recognizable in West Bloomfield. Have you ever wondered what the logo symbolizes or wanted to know more about its history? Mercedes-Benz of Bloomfield Hills reports all of the fascinating details, below!

The Mercedes-Benz Logo History

Before we can discuss the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning, we need to travel far back in time to 1890, when Gottlieb Daimler founded the luxury auto company (then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG). That same year, the company was taken over by Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek, but Daimler’s two sons, Paul and Adolf, remained heavily involved for many years to come.

It is said that Paul and Adolf must have been studying their family’s history in 1909, when they recalled a postcard sent by their father in 1872. On the postcard, he had marked the location of their home with a 3-pointed star. Not long after in the same year of 1909, DMG acquired the logo as their now legendary emblem, proceeding to emblazon it on each and every one of the vehicles they produced.

During the first 15 years of the Mercedes-Benz logo, it was colored blue. It wasn’t until 1926 that it underwent its first revision, with a laurel border added around the outside. In 1934, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was changed yet again to being all silver.

What Is the Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning?

As you may have surmised from the brief history lesson above, the Mercedes-Benz logo serves as a symbol of the company’s rich heritage; beginning with one man who had a dream to engineer some of the highest grade performance vehicles the auto industry would ever see.

Curious Southfield luxury vehicle enthusiasts may wonder: Is the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning merely a testament to the Daimler sons’ devotion to their father, or is there more to the story? Well, that depends on who you talk to! According to Mercedes-Benz officials, there is indeed more to be said:

  • The Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star is actually meant to symbolize the luxury brand’s ambition for universal motorization. Each point on the star represents an environment: Land, Sea, and Air. The Daimler brothers were confident that DMG would one day develop luxury transportation for all three.

What Is the Mercedes-Benz AMG® Logo?

If you’ve ever studied the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo up close, you may view it as being more mysterious than the traditional 3-pointed star. Interesting as it may be to entertain the idea of it being a secret map or some sort of cryptic symbol, the truth is not so abstract:

  • The right portion of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo is a cam, valve, and valve spring –– three vital engine components to symbolize the fervor for engineering that goes into every Mercedes-Benz AMG® powerhouse.
  • The left portion of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo is more visually exciting: an apple tree perched beside a river. But this isn’t just some randomly chosen, idyllic scene. Rather, it is the historic coat of arms of the town of Affalterbach, Germany, where the Mercedes-Benz AMG® headquarters resides.
