The Mercedes-Benz Logo History

Before we can discuss the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning, we need to travel far back in time to 1890, when Gottlieb Daimler founded the luxury auto company (then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG). That same year, the company was taken over by Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek, but Daimler’s two sons, Paul and Adolf, remained heavily involved for many years to come.

It is said that Paul and Adolf must have been studying their family’s history in 1909, when they recalled a postcard sent by their father in 1872. On the postcard, he had marked the location of their home with a 3-pointed star. Not long after in the same year of 1909, DMG acquired the logo as their now legendary emblem, proceeding to emblazon it on each and every one of the vehicles they produced.

During the first 15 years of the Mercedes-Benz logo, it was colored blue. It wasn’t until 1926 that it underwent its first revision, with a laurel border added around the outside. In 1934, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was changed yet again to being all silver.

Rather, it is the historic coat of arms of the town of Affalterbach, Germany, where the Mercedes-Benz AMG® headquarters resides.
