Are All Electric Car Chargers the Same?

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Charging

If you’ve just bought an EV like the 2022 EQS from Mercedes-EV, you might be wondering about how charging your car works. Unlike hybrids, fully-electric vehicles have to be plugged in to recharge the battery. You can either recharge the battery at home or on the go at a public charging station in the West Bloomfield area. But are all electric car chargers the same? If you’ve owned an EV before, do you need a different one for your new Mercedes-Benz?

The short answer is no! With the exception of Tesla, which exclusively uses the Tesla Supercharger, all electric car chargers are universal and can be used for just about any EV. You won’t have to buy a new charger for a new car, although most new EVs come with a Level 1 charger included.

Although electric car chargers are universal, there are three different levels of charging to be aware of, two of which are related to home charging and one of which is only available in public. The team at Mercedes-Benz of Bloomfield Hills has all the details on the different types of electric car chargers in the guide below.

What Are the Different Types of Electric Car Chargers?

So, what are the different levels of charging for your Southfield-area EV? There are three, aptly named Levels 1, 2, and 3. These levels are primarily set apart by their charging times, which vary from multiple days to under an hour! Here’s a basic overview:

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 chargers plug into the same three-prong outlets you find everywhere inside and outside your house. As such, they’re the easiest outlets to find because they’re just about everywhere! However, they’re also by far the slowest type of charger, since they’re not typically used to charge something as large as a car. Level 1 charging works at a speed of around 3 to 5 miles per hour, meaning it takes multiple days to get your battery back up to a full charge. Level 1 charging is best for plug-in hybrids – which have smaller batteries – and last-resort charging.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 chargers are the most common type of charging used by EV drivers. They have to be professionally installed in your home, but they charge your vehicle much faster than a Level 1 charger. Depending on the size and power of the charging station, a Level 2 charger can generate anywhere from 12 to 80 miles to your EV per hour! In general, you can plug your EV in after dinner and have it ready to go for your commute the next morning.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging, also called DC (direct current) fast charging, is generally only available at public charging stations, since home power grids simply don’t have enough electricity to power them. They work at a charging speed of around 3 to 20 miles per minute (180 to 1,200 miles per hour), and many can get you back up to a full charge in under an hour! These are an excellent choice for drivers who need a quick top-off on the road or who are taking a long-distance trip.
