A mild hybrid by Mercedes-Benz utilizes a 48-volt, 0.9-kWh battery mounted to the rear of the vehicle with the internal combustion engine for every West Bloomfield drive. The 48-volt battery powers the integrated starter generator (ISG), which is located between the engine block and transmission. The ISG contains the alternator, starter, and electric motor. The ISG provides a power boost in certain situations to add horsepower without overloading the internal combustion engine. The movement of the internal combustion engine uses the alternator to recharge the mild hybrid battery.
By comparison, an ordinary car battery that powers the accessories is 12 volts. A full hybrid battery operates at anywhere between 100 and 300 volts with around 5 to 15 kWh, depending on the model you select for Southfield journeys.
The overall goal of a mild hybrid from Mercedes-Benz is to improve performance and acceleration when needed. You can drive your mild hybrid vehicle in Eco mode for the most fuel savings. Other modes may use the internal combustion engine only.
