How to Buy a Car in Another State

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA
Have you found a great deal on a new vehicle, but you’re a resident of another state? You may be wondering whether buying a car in another state involves any extra hassle. Fortunately for car-buyers in West Bloomfield and beyond, buying a car out of state really isn’t that much more complicated than making the purchase in your home state. Learn more about how to buy a car in another state in the guide below from the Mercedes-Benz of Bloomfield Hills finance center, and be sure to contact our team with any further questions!

Registering a New Car In Your Home State

Can you buy a car out of state in the same amount of time as it would take to buy in your own state? Buying a car in another state will take a bit longer, but there’s only one extra step that you’ll need to worry about: registering your new vehicle in your home state. You can take care of this with a trip to your local Southfield-area DMV! You’ll need a few documents to register your car in a new state:

  • Bill of sale with purchase price clearly listed
  • Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
  • Completed application for vehicle transaction form
  • Completed odometer disclosure state for title transfer
  • Vehicle title signed by the previous owner (if your car is pre-owned)
  • Lienholders’ names and address
  • Registration Fees
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of residency

At the DMV, tell the clerk that you bought the car out of state with the intent of titling and registering it at your address. Your bill of sale will be returned to you, but the DMV will retain your MI title and charge or refund you the difference in sales tax between the two states. In a few weeks, you should receive your new title in the mail. That’s it!

Taxes & Fees When Buying a Car in Another State

Can you buy a car out of state without paying significant fees? Yes! There’s no specific charge for registering and titling your car in a state other than the one you bought it in. You’ll owe fees for the registration itself, but you would be paying those same fees to register your newly purchased vehicle in your home state, anyway. Beyond the purchase of your car, you can expect to pay:

  • Local sales tax
  • The tax difference between states
  • Vehicle registration fee
